Job Overview

  • Ensure that the work carried out in the Data Management department is in strict accordance with relevant protocols, Standard Operating Procedures and Good Clinical Practice and that the quality of all services meets or exceeds customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with peers to develop global harmonized SOPs and specific quality processes and procedures for Data Management activities.
  • Have overall responsibility for managing the Data Management department to include managing performance and career development via the PMD process, regular catch ups and status meetings ensuring that all group members are aware of objectives at all times. Ensure attention is also paid to interpersonal skills and achievement of competency standards. Review any individual issues with supervisors and staff proactively and in a timely fashion, work with the supervisors to resolve all issues in a supportive manner, creating and maintaining performance plans, as appropriate. Provide constructive feedback as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with peers to establish global Data Management competency models and assist with the development of training programs and ensure staff achievement of position competencies.
  • Support Data Managers to ensure that studies are delivered according to Sponsor requirements on time, to high quality and within budget. Manage all project team members effectively providing training, acting as source of advice and performing QC as appropriate.
  • Overall responsibility for department recruitment decisions to include salaries, starting packages and inductions. Determine required staffing levels to meet short term and long term department needs, liaising with senior management as appropriate. Ensure that all new starters have objectives and that they receive adequate training.
  • Formulate and approve department strategies and objectives for short and long term goals
  • Review and approve department metrics for input into Early Development costing model. Ensure that these are kept up to date and that Business Operations are aware of any updates
  • Have responsibility for reviewing and inputting into the Data Management budget. Work with Director of the department to ensure costs are kept low. Ensure that department financial needs and business requirements are both met in order that the department maintains a high operating margin.
  • Regularly review and implement proactive prevention strategies on current systems in operation within the department to ensure that processes are always as efficient and effective as possible, based on metrics and forecasts. Work with peers to establish global Data Management processes and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and to ensure standards are applied consistently. Especially work closely with other Early Development sites to ensure a consistent approach and that all Covance CRU standards are maintained.
  • Have input into all new technologies and make informed decisions regarding which new systems are to be implemented for Early Development; liaising with Late Stage Development Services Directors as appropriate.
  • Identify and implement process improvement solutions



  • Support business development by collating data management information for Request for Proposals and Request for Information. Prepare and present at Sponsor meetings in support of CCRU capabilities. Work closely with Client Services and business Operations in maximizing new business opportunities. Represent data management as appropriate.
  • Oversee Data Management project and department budgets including tracking costs and revenues. Working with the Director to ensure that Data Management are sustaining a high operating margin and to agreed targets.
  • Act as an advisor to all other departments on all data management activities e.g., Business Operations, Client Services, Project Management.
  • Establish and maintain strategic client relationships and receive client satisfaction surveys and implement appropriate action plans as necessary
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Education / Qualifications

Minimum Required:  BSc in a computing, life science, mathematical, or statistical subject


Minimum Required:  A minimum of 10 years related clinical trial experience. Strong people management skills and supervisory skills gained from a minimum of 5 years line management experience.
