Job Overview

Formerly International Food Network now Covance Food Solutions, is looking to add a Senior Food Innovation Scientist to our team. This person should be well versed in all phases of the food product development cycle and can work independently to develop new products from concept through plant scale-up.

You will be working on a variety of product categories and as part of a dynamic small team at the Reading, UK, site, with colleagues of similar background.


Covance is a diverse, global Food Solutions business covering all aspects of product design and product integrity and hence you will gain experience in this developing field with a diverse range of food industry clients.

Covance is moving (early 2018) to a new purpose-built Science Park location, giving the opportunity to be part of a thriving commercial and technical community.

Core responsibilities include:


  • The management and execution of client Briefs for the completion of food product development projects.
  • Preparing Proposals to initiate client development projects.
  • Planning and execution of trials both at Covance facilities and third-party pilot plants and factory units.
  • Communicating both internally, and to clients, in verbal and written format, the output of technical projects. Collation and reporting of all technical data relating to product development projects including formulations, process, nutrition, stability, etc.
  • Developing relationships with clients in order to generate incremental business.

About You


The successful candidate will have:


  • Bachelor Degree or equivalent in Food Science or related subject.
  • Significant years of practical experience in food product development from within the food industry (manufacturing, ingredients, etc).
  • Broad category experience. Ideally with Baking and Snacks experience including Gluten free.
  • Ability to develop basic labels, including ingredient line and nutrition facts panels.
  • Some project management skills.
  • Ability to conduct review of related literature and references to obtain the required information and subsequently apply it.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Highly skilled in conducting new food developments, data interpretation, and writing reports.
  • Skilled in performing technical presentations.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Education / Qualifications

University Degree in Food Science or related science discipline to 2.1 level or higher


5 years within the food industry in product development, technical or application areas
